Update: babies, baking, crochet, and Swn festival

Since coming back from Berlin I’ve been nothing but suffering from hideousness in the form of a very long cold and sinusitis. Shane has been taking great pleasure in reminding me I’m not as young as I used to be, though I’ve been trying to remind him that even when I was younger I very rarely went out til sunrise 3 days on the trot. Well, perhaps I did. Anyway.

We’ve a bit to catch up on, from last weekend really, so I’ll go from there, and a lovely visit to two of my lovely uni friends who live in a little village on top of a mountain just outside Cardiff. They’ve just had a baby girl, so we went to meet her and eat a massive roast dinner.

gwen obviously didn’t find us very interesting, as she spent quite a lot of time asleep

Nat and Gav are lovely. I met them at university here in Cardiff, and thankfully we’ve stayed in touched while they’ve moved away, travelled the world, and moved back.

Most of last week was spent trying to battle this horrible lurgt I’ve picked up since getting back from Berlin, and as a result I didn’t do much - lots of early bedtimes and trying to get better. Part of this involved inhaling steam using some random gizmo I picked up from Lidl about a year ago.I do look ridiculous while I’m using it though…

But I did sneak out on Thursday night for the opening night of Swn festival. For those of you who don’t know, Swn is a city-wide music festival curated by local media maestro Huw Stephens, along with some other folk. It’s a showcase of underground music, and while the artist roster is usually a bit too indie schmindie for my liking, I did catch Three Trapped Tigers at the Kruger night at Y Ffuch Goch. Very good they were too and if you see them playing near you anytime I recommend you see them. I was too short and too far back to take any pics, but check out their myspace if you’re interested.

I did a bit of baking this weekend too. I’ve been burning a lot of cakes recently, and just discovered it’s due us having a fan assisted, super hot oven. So I decided to screw recipe cooking time, and went freestyle.

fruit cake
(It looks nice, but I actually fucked this one up - uncooked in the middle so I thought perhaps microwaving it would help. It didn’t).

carrot cake muffins
These are, officially, the best things I’ve ever baked. EVER. Carrot cake muffin jobs. AMAZING.

Other than that, it’s been a pretty quiet weekend. Joe Kruger was around quite a bit for Swn festival which was lovely, as I miss him since he’s moved. He’s gone now, and Shane’s gone to the Gower with Nousha for a couple of days, so it’s just me and the cat, cold chilling, mischief making. Actually I think I’m going to have a bath and hit the hay early. Sausage rolls.
