Well ARGH if it hasn’t been ages since I posted a mix. For this, I can only apologise…. it was an extremely busy end-of-summer.
01 - The Electones - Death With Benefits
The promo of this CD was in my Kruger to-listen pile for months, but I’ve only just got round to it now, typically. The whole CD is really very good - mid to down tempo quirk electronica stuff.
02 - Gui Boratto - Gate 7
The cheeky Brazilian. More space face electronica. I wonder how you pronounce his name? I’ve been saying ‘gooey’, just cos I think that sounds fun
03 - Simian Mobile Disco - Synthesise
From new album Temporary Pleasure, which got a slating because it was too eclectic. Get lost music reviewing snob types who only heard their last album, SMD have always been eclectic
04 - Autokratz - Always More (yuksek remix)
I’m not usually the biggest fan Autokratz, but this remix is the biz
05 - Renaissance Man - Ryhtym
There’s some right weird noises in this here track (said in northern accent). Look out for their upcoming remix of HEALTH’s Death+, which might just be so amazing I crap my pants
06 - Quantic - Sweet Calling
Taken from his Apricot Morning album (possibly my fav of his), Brighton based Quantic invites Alice Russell’s lungs to blow everyone out of the room on this lovely warm song, which is just Tru Thoughts through and through. She gave a wicked performance at Big Chill this year.
07 - She Keeps Bees - Wear Red
I know I’ve posted a track from their album on another mix, but I don’t care. Jess Larrabee has got one of the hotdamned best bluesy rock voices in music today (and one of the best names). FACT
08 - Aerosol - Psychedelic Coffee Buzz
Another one that’s been on the Kruger promo to-listen-to pile for months. Lush downtempo-ey electronic stuff
09 - Psapp - Mr Ant
I avoided listening to their newer album The Camel’s Back (which this track is from) for ages, because I love love love Tiger, My Friend almost more than I love hot chocolate on a cold day. Almost. I started listening to it courtesy of my ipod doing the shuffle, and love it now too. Check out the how they came to be story on the link above - super cute!
10 - Eels - I Like Birds
From my favourite Eels album, Daisies of the Galaxy. The whole album is just straightup amazing. There are other tracks I like more than this one - perhaps like Grace Kelly Blues and Sound of Fear - but this song makes me smile everytime I hear it.
TRACK 11 - MYSTERY BONUS TRACK!
I rediscovered this group recently when writing up the Lady Gaga biog (one of the reasons this mixtape is so late). I was freaking OBSESSED with these guys when I was about seven years old - I had their Christmas songs album on tape and everything. I know it’s probably going to make you spew, but that’s kind of the point of including it. EMBRACE YOUR INNER CHILD, and ACKNOWLEDGE THEIR AWESOMENESS!!! or just delete it off your itunes. or something.
